Myth:
A disinfectant wet wipe I found online when I typed in “disinfecting” will keep my customers and employees safe.
Reality:
Online posts are not always correct. Cleaning is not the same as disinfecting. Sanitizing is not the same as disinfecting.
You can see wet wipes for sale online that were incorrectly put in “disinfecting” categories or the company misleads people by implying the wipes are disinfecting. Do your homework if you are not ordering from a knowledgeable distributor. Sanitizing does not kill viruses, only bacteria. Unless there is an EPA registration number and it says “disinfectant”, that surface wipe is just a basic wet wipe. It is not approved to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses (like colds, flu and COVID-19).
Myth:
Any disinfectant spray or wipe will quickly kill basically all germs.
Reality:
First, a marketing claim of Kills 99.9% of germs may or may not kill the specific bacteria or virus you need killed. If you want to kill COVID-19, look on the EPA List N.
Second, you need to leave a non-porous surface wet for the disinfectant to fully work. Each chemical has a different “wet time” so you need to check. Some wipes on the market will need you to rewet the surface again to get to the correct time. If you use a spray disinfectant and dry the surface immediately, that may not adequately kill harmful germs.
Fresh Start® Disinfectant Wipes are List N, EPA-registered to kill SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus) on hard non-porous surfaces in just 30 seconds! (That means that the EPA reviewed the test results to approve the fast acting 30 second “kill time”). Many popular wipes you purchase at retail stores have a much longer time – between 2 minutes and 4 minutes that the surface has to remain wet.
Myth:
We bought a lot of hand sanitizer so we just use that for surfaces also which should be fine.
Reality:
Sorry, it is not the same to use hand sanitizer (approved by the FDA) on hard surfaces, which is approved by the EPA. Different chemistry.
During this coronavirus pandemic, poison control centers have had an increase in calls about accidental ingestion of hand sanitizer, so it is important that people not let children or pets eat/drink the sanitizer.
Keep hand sanitizer away from heat and flames because it is flammable.
Myth:
An alcohol wipe is a familiar chemical so that is probably the best to use.
Reality:
Alcohol wipes are very drying and can cause skin irritation. They are also flammable so think about where you store the wipes. Keep them away from heat, sparks, or open flames.
